Volunteering with United North Piha Lifeguard Service is more than just a responsibility, its at the heart of everything we do. Our volunteer surf lifeguards patrol one of New Zealand’s most challenging and dangerous beaches, protecting thousands of visitors every year.
Becoming a Surf Lifeguard
Becoming a qualified surf lifeguard is the first step into the world of surf lifesaving.
Requirements:

Be at least 14 years old
-
Swim 400m freestyle in under 9 minutes
-
Join an SLSNZ-affiliated club
Training Includes:
-
Surf Lifeguard Award (entry-level qualification)
-
Rescue techniques in the pool and surf
-
First aid and CPR
-
Communication skills (including radio use)
-
A theory test covering beach safety and hazards
On completion, you’ll join a patrol team and volunteer on weekends and public holidays during the season.
Patrol Support
Not all lifesaving happens in the water. Patrol Support members provide vital backup by assisting with:

First aid

Radio communication
-
Patrol setup and observation
-
General support on the beach
Requirements:

Be at least 14 years old
-
Be a financial member of the club
-
Complete the Patrol Support Award
-
No swimming ability is required
This role is essential in keeping our patrols running smoothly.
